INTERVIEW w/ Lucie Gavroche

Substance: I just wanted to say Much Thanks for some Q&A with the Substance CREW<3

Gavroche: No problem!

Substance: I just wanted to start on the first step and ask what made you into this soulful singer in this time with the abundance of Electro and Bass driven sounds in this day and time?

Gavroche: Well I've always been inspired by old music, my parents have played me an electric mix of tracks since I was a very young child. As a result I tend to find a lot of modern music hugely overproduced. Also I don't have any equipment other than my guitar, keyboard and my banjo. I don't even own a laptop so most electronics are out of the question. I just sing about what is important to me. PS: I'm on my Dad's laptop)

Substance: How or what do you find is important to you in this lifetime? How do you find isolation in this world?

Gavroche: I fee that we can never know what is around the corner in life, so having a close family and friends has always driven me forward. I love nature. I've always lived out in the middle of nowhere so I find peace in that. What do you mean by isolation? What makes me lonely?

Substance: Nothing, it's just that your lyrics seem so close to heart which happens to be a very rare thing now a days.

Gavroche: Ah! Yes, well. I am human so there are times when I can feel very caught up in it all, or just overwhelmed. And I wouldn't know how to sing about, "Popping bottles in da CLUB" because it's not something I care about. Singing is an expression of what I'm feeling at the time. Music without emotion seems to be a pointless thing to me.

Substance: What would your comparison be between BLOCK PARTY and Nicki Minaj? Take 2 very successful artist in their own respected period, yet one spoke on compassion and love well the other was about<Insert your own>

Gavroche: Stupid hoes? LOL. That would be my input. Nicki Minaj may have rhythm vocally, but I can't see a drop of melody there. Block Party are a cool band, perhaps it's the fact that they actually sing about love and compassion that I like them. Also, they're just fucking funky and dancy as hell, and you have to love that.

Substance: I LOVE IT! Well I don't mean to tap too much into your heart, current influences at that moment?

Gavroche: Always Billie Holiday and The Smiths. I'm really enjoying Keaton Henson at the moment, his album is DEEP. I'm listening to a lot of Mogwai at the moment too though as well, they're fantastic.

Substance: How about one for the boys? If a man were to give a women a present, what would be the perfect gift?

Gavroche: Well my best guy friend gave me a packet of "Cock" Soup" signed by Noel Fielding... and that went down pretty darn well. But if not, flowers are actually always perfect.

Substance: Well I'm sure if any woman took, "Cock Soup" she would have to be the one. Any shout outs you'd like to give as we end this interview? (Smile)

Gavroche: Of course my brother who is the talented Dub Scout. We make a totally different sound but we've been doing stuff together lately that sounds cool. Also Sleepwalkers- they're an English/Metalcore/HardCore band that you should definitely check out if you like the "eavy stuff. And to my best mate Rupert who is sitting on the sofa next to me, enjoying a film about Bobby Darin!

Substance: Well let them know I'm not some swine for the Queen's sake and thank you so much, it was a very wonderful slice of life.
