Interview with Shayne Herrera

Ramon: Big Ups from Substance for taking out some time for a couple of Q&A from local Professional photographer, BOSS Shayne Herrera.

Shayne Herrera: Thanks!

Ramon: No problem man. First I gotta ask what exactly is it about photography that is unlike any other 9-5?

Shayne Herrera: A normal 9-5 has a pretty clear path, a clear road map and you pretty much already know. You go to work, you check-in and you go do the first task then the second and etc. But, as you know, photography takes me to places I have never been.

Ramon: How so?

Shayne Herrera: I recall you and I were headed to a photo show of mine in San Francisco.

Ramon: Yeah, fucking nuts!

Shayne Herrera: You somehow ended up with a CUTIE run away on your lap that hop in the car running away from her Parole. Then the police came around.

Ramon: Dude that shit was straight savage. She fucking booked it and crossed the Light Rail tracks and pulled off a WIN! Crazy shit happens when you hang out with a photographer.

Shayne Herrera: I never plan my day. It just ends up always being the best day of my life everyday.

Ramon: So is that what your body of work represents? I noticed from your website; http://shayneherrera.com that your work consist of a majority of street photography. Why is that? It's not the typical San Francisco street signs or everyday wedding pictures.

Shayne Herrera: I just like to meet people and photograph them and how they live. I like to call it, "Lifestyle Photography". It is less of illustrating what life is and more of just documenting life as it happens.

Ramon: It's very refreshing art work.

Shayne Herrera: I appreciate that. I just want it to be honest and mine.

Ramon: You have a book published for sale, could you tell us something about it or what kind of photos to expect?

Shayne Herrera: Sure. I spent my life looking at other photographer's books and just wishing I had something to show, something to offer the world. I realized I was trying too hard to find something, but one thing I knew was that I was a person that did a lot of different things. It could be traveling, cooking, drawing, taking photos or whatever. I met a lot of people in my travels and saw so many things that I just decided to show the world what everyone else was missing. That's why I titled the book, "I don't see it that way."

Ramon: Do you think people are naturally artistic or that maybe this is a period of enlightenment? What's your insight on it?

Shayne Herrera: Hmmm.I think art is like everything else. It's in everyone and all they need is encouragement. They need to ask the right questions and get the right answers. I tell my friends that I wish I could learn how to do everything in the entire world. Fisherman, wielder, horse trainer and I would take pictures of it all.

Ramon: Any tips on what a person entering the photography world might need to know?

Shayne Herrera: Yeah. The fundamentals, white balance, the relationship between shutter speed and movement and all that. An Iphone won't teach you how to know what to do in every situation. Practice will so just keep trying and keep asking questions or just email me shayne@shayneherrera.com

Ramon: What's more important; a camera's body or the lens?

Shayne Herrera: The person behind it.

Ramon: Very true! What about Instagram?

Shanye Herrera: Do I consider it photography? Not really, it's just a point and shoot. Nothing more, nothing less.

Ramon: I just want to give a huge thanks for taking the time for some Q&A! Big thanks from Substance!

Shayne Herrera: No problem Ramon. Let's go find some runaways!!!
